Motivational Interviewing, Thursdays, September 17 - October 8, 2026

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a self-management support approach that uses a collaborative conversation style with patients, clients, or peers in order to draw out and strengthen their motivation and commitment to change. Whether you are a home care nurse trying to help someone who is struggling with multiple chronic conditions or a caseworker helping someone to meet their daily needs on a limited income, the core skills can be learned by anyone interested in supporting others to make change.

This 4-week workshop (3 hrs/week) gives healthcare staff a solid foundation in Motivational Interviewing (MI). You'll learn the spirit of MI, master the OARS skills—open questions, affirmations, reflections, summaries—and practise responding to change talk versus sustain talk. Sessions cover mindful listening, ask-tell-ask, Brief Action Plans, and handling “resistance” in complex patient situations. By the end, you'll understand MI's four processes and leave with practical strategies to integrate MI into daily clinical interactions—a hands-on, comprehensive introduction to supporting behaviour change.
