Motivational Interviewing, Thursdays, Nov 7 - 28

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a self-management support approach that uses a collaborative conversation style with patients, clients, or peers, in order to draw out and strengthen their motivation and commitment to change. Whether you are a home care nurse trying to help someone who is struggling with multiple chronic conditions or a case worker helping someone to meet their daily needs on a limited income, the core skills can be learned by anyone interested in supporting others to make change.

This 4 session workshop (3hrs/week x 4 weeks) is designed help participants develop an understanding of Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Participants will delve into the spirit of MI, learning to embody it and differentiate between practices that are consistent with MI and those that are not. The training emphasizes the use of OARS - Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries - and equips participants with the ability to respond effectively to discussions about change.

Participants will engage in discussions about listening with an uncluttered mind and learn to demonstrate the core skills of MI. They will discover methods to provide information and advice that align with the spirit of MI and practice the ask-tell-ask technique. The workshop also provides guidance on creating Brief Action Plans and comprehending the concept of ‘resistance.’

The training will enable participants to identify and differentiate between change talk and sustain talk, and develop strategies to respond to both. They will learn to respond to change talk using the core skills of MI and understand the four processes of MI. Participants will also identify factors contributing to ‘resistance’ and learn to respond to patients or complex situations in a manner consistent with MI. Finally, they will consider ways to apply these skills in practice, making this workshop a comprehensive guide to mastering the principles and techniques of Motivational Interviewing.
